Start your day with sunlight

Over the years, we have seen warnings about the damage caused by exposure to sunlight. Prolonged sunlight exposure is considered one of the leading causes of skin cancer (melanoma) in the past years. We must take measures to avoid harmful exposure to UV rays on our skin and eyes, but sunlight can also positively impact our overall health. Additionally, a lack of sunlight can cause sleep problems, chemical imbalances in the brain, and mood swings.

The association of regular sunlight exposure with skin cancer has brought confusion and controversy regarding sunlight’s long-term benefits in the life of human beings. In the past decades, significant technological advances have revolutionized our workforce by moving our society to spend more time indoors. The Covid-19 pandemic increased our time indoors, attracting the scientific community’s attention.

In a study carried out in 2020, the lack of sun exposure is considered a public problem that affects our population. In this study by Alfredsson, Lars et al. attempt to substantiate the real benefits of healthy sunlight exposure for humans and points out that much of the existing scientific data does not consider other benefits of sunlight in humans beyond the synthesis of vitamin D3.

Sunlight is good for you

Sunlight is associated with the biosynthesis of vitamin D3 in the body and helps us maintain a good sleep schedule. This study indicates that healthy exposure to sunlight is related to the preventive effects of cardiovascular diseases, colorectal cancer, and diabetes. At the same time, sunlight has a positive impact on preventing other neurological or chronic diseases such as Alzheimer’s, asthma, and multiple sclerosis. Such positive effects of sunlight should encourage individuals to integrate practices that improve our health and well-being in adulthood. Morning or afternoon walks, beach trips, attending outdoor activities, and gardening are healthy activities people can enjoy in the sun. Exposing ourselves to sunlight is one of the most effective ways to start our day in a good mood and maintain a sense of well-being.

Now that you know some of the benefits sunlight can have in your life, look for ways to spend more time outdoors with the necessary preventive measures. Some actions we can take to protect ourselves from dangerous UV rays when exposed to sunlight are to use sunscreen, wear a hat, and glasses with UV protection and go outside during hours when sunlight is not at its maximum power (during the mornings or the afternoons).
