Scared Sweetless

With the end of the year approaching, it can be tough to stick to a diet. To make things harder, the holidays kick off with Halloween, and so we’re prone to overindulging in candy and sweet treats. If that gets you down, you might find this information helpful.

As reported by The Guardian, a study performed by the University of Westminster discovered that watching horror movies has the potential to burn up over 100 extra calories. More specifically, the study found that watching a 90-minute scary movie could burn approximately 113 calories− equivalent to the number of calories burned during a 30-minute walk.

These spooky films’ intense sequences and jump scares caused viewer heart rates to elevate, resulting in rapid energy expenditure. In fact, the 10 films that were tested throughout the study had pulses rising off the charts! Dr. Richard Mackenzie, professor and cell metabolism of the aforementioned university, explained that “as the pulse quickens and blood pumps around the body faster, the body experiences a surge in adrenaline. It is this release of fast-acting adrenaline produced during short bursts of intense stress (or in this case, brought on by fear), which is known to lower the appetite, increase the basal metabolic rate, and ultimately burn a higher level of calories.”

Reel Time

Listed below are the 10 movies that were tested in this study. They were ranked as follows:

1. The Shining: 184 calories
2. Jaws: 161 calories
3. The Exorcist: 158 calories
4. Alien: 152 calories
5. Saw: 133 calories
6. A Nightmare on Elm Street: 118 calories
7. Paranormal Activity: 111 calories
8. The Blair Witch Project: 105 calories
9. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: 107 calories
10. [Rec]: 101 calories

Watching these films does not take the place of an actual workout, but it can feel nice knowing that you are burning a few calories while lounging on your couch. These movies are considered some of the scariest and may not be suitable for all audiences. So, pay attention to the ratings and proceed with caution!
