Diabetes Prevention Program
Seniors at risk for type 2 diabetes may find help managing their overall health. Medicare Part B offers a free once-per-lifetime Diabetes Prevention Program to those who qualify. The program is part of the CDC’s National Diabetes Prevention Program aimed at lifestyle changes to reduce an individual’s risk of developing diabetes. According to the CDC, participants may be able to reduce their risk by more than 70%.
Realistic Lifestyle Changes
Figuring out how to take charge of your health can be a challenging and confusing task. The lifestyle changes, needed for diabetes prevention, require a full-scope approach. The Diabetes Prevention Program will begin with weekly core class sessions over a span of 6 months. These sessions will provide education, tips, and strategies to address diet, exercise, sustaining motivation, and managing stress.
Trained coaches teach manageable lifestyle adjustments and help participants create new habits. Participants will have access to curriculum handouts and resources to help keep track of all the new information they receive during classes. Coaches will challenge individuals to try new things and meet their personal goals. Participants will have the opportunity to engage in discussions as well as connect with other individuals on a similar journey. Being a part of a like-minded community that encourages and celebrates each other is an amazing asset that will likely lead to more success along the way.
A Two-Part Program
During the first part of the program participants will learn about eating healthy even when they need to eat out and adding more physical activity into their day even on a busy schedule. Additionally, they will learn how to get back on track after sliding into old habits and how to handle daily stress factors. The second part of the program will focus on building onto the new skill sets they have learned while also teaching them how to work through their individual obstacles to maintain and meet goals.
Support and Coaching for Success
Creating and sticking to new habits takes time and practice. Participants are encouraged to access monthly follow-up coaching sessions after completing the initial core program. These sessions provide a great resource to help individuals stay on track and stay motivated. Medicare will initially provide 6 of these monthly sessions. If certain weight loss and attendance goals are met, participants may even qualify for an additional 12 monthly sessions.
