Fun Alternatives to Screen Time

Having your children home due to the pandemic has made it increasingly obvious how hard it is to keep them entertained. Letting them watch their favorite videos or play their favorite games with screen time is one of the simplest ways to do it; however, there is a definite concern with letting your child spend so much time staring at a screen. Here are a few different alternatives to screen time.

Screen Time Free Activities

Create a busy box. The first idea is something quite simple that you can pull out when you want to give your child a break from screen time. A “busy box” is just some sort of container that holds a variety of different activities your child can do. It can hold puzzles, coloring books, arts and crafts, etc.

Let them help. Children are always looking to be helpful. You can ask them to gather the ingredients for dinner or give them a small chore to do while you are cleaning up. They can help you and stay off their device at the same time.

Creative toys. A lot of toys lose their novelty pretty soon after they are bought. This is why it is a good idea to give your children toys they can use over and over again. A few examples are Legos, Play-Doh, and building blocks. These toys nurture your child’s creativity and can be used for long periods of time.

Outdoor play. You can keep it old-fashioned and just send your child outside to play. There are a million games to play outside that do not require a screen. Always make safety your priority and keep your children in sight while they play.

Have a scavenger hunt. This alternative does not have to be too complex. There does not need to be an entire planned scavenger hunt; instead, you can have your child find you something that starts with a letter B or that is the color yellow. Your child will be too preoccupied with finding the objects that they will not spend too much time on their device.

Host playdates. Letting your child go on or have playdates is a great way to have them keep busy and socialize with friends. Come to an agreement with a friend or neighbor to have your kids play together. It gives you, as a parent, a few hours to run errands or relax, and prevents your child from spending all day on their screen.
