Gardening has many benefits for our bodies such as providing stress relief, physical activity, and boosting Vitamin D. You can create your own garden, help in a community garden, or help in a friend’s garden. Whichever way you are able to do it, you will be able to enjoy all the benefits that gardening has to offer.

Stress Relief

Gardening is a proven activity to help relieve stress. Being outdoors and connecting with nature does so much for our mental state and mood. Spending time working in the garden can help to lower the stress hormone cortisol and bring you back into a relaxed state. It has even been shown in research to improve anxiety and depression symptoms. Getting out in the fresh air helps to clear the lungs and increase oxygen intake. This causes an increase in serotonin levels which works in the body as a mood booster.

Exercise

Digging, raking, shoveling, lifting, crawling, or any number of other things you may find yourself doing in a garden all count as exercise. In fact, you may even find yourself sore after an afternoon of gardening. Depending on the activity, exercise from gardening can fall into the moderate or even vigorous level of exercise. Meanwhile, gardening has a calming effect on the mind, and many find the work to be very satisfying and enjoyable. A workout that doesn’t feel like a chore? Now that is a win, win situation.

Vitamin D Boost

Plants are not the only ones that need sunlight to thrive. When exposed to sunlight, our bodies are able to create Vitamin D which is responsible for a multitude of functions within the body. Vitamin D is a necessary part of maintaining overall health. Regular exposure to the sun helps strengthen the immune system, improve bone health, and reduces the risks of many cancers. While sun exposure is great for your body, just be careful not to overdo it and risk sunburn.
