Earthing provides an array of health benefits, including reduced inflammation, faster healing, pain reduction, and improved sleep. But wait a second! Simply standing outside on the ground can do all this?! It may sound like nonsense, but I assure you it is very real. However, don’t just take my word for it! Through many different studies, researchers have proven the healing effect that direct contact with the ground can have.
Electrons and Earthing
As natural beings, it really should come as no surprise that our bodies have a unique connection with the earth and nature around us. Modern-day lifestyles have taken us further and further away from the natural world, leaving us to suffer the consequences of that separation. It seems that as time goes on, more people are awakening to this understanding and working to consciously bring nature back into their lives. Earthing, also known as grounding, happens when we make direct skin-to-ground contact with the earth, and therefore enable an electrical exchange between earth and our bodies. The earth’s surface is covered with a continuous flow of free, negatively charged electrons. By direct contact with the earth, we are able to uptake electrons for use within the body.
In a research review entitled “Earthing: Healing Implications of Reconnecting the Human Body to the Earth’s Surface Electrons,” the authors claim “mounting evidence suggests that the Earth’s negative potential can create a stable internal bioelectrical environment for the normal functioning of all body systems.” Cells within the body use electrical currents to send signals and govern the functions within it. Essentially, by grounding our bodies with the earth’s electrical field, we shield ourselves from outside electrical interferences. This is incredibly important as evidence shows that electrical interference causes a host of regulatory issues within the body.
Healing Through the Earth
Earthing has shown dramatic results in subduing inflammation in the body. A study that looked at the effects of earthing on inflammation surrounding an injury found a significant reduction in inflammation at the trauma site as well as improved healing. One diabetic participant with an 8-month-old open wound on their ankle saw a reduction in redness and the beginnings of new tissue forming a scab after just one week of daily grounding. After two weeks, the redness from their inflammation was almost completely gone, healthy skin tone was returning, and the wound was completely closed. Furthermore, pain in the affected foot had dissipated by 80 percent.
Another study saw similar results when observing the effects of earthing on muscle soreness after a workout. Participants practicing earthing saw a significant reduction in pain and immune system cells at the site of the sore muscle. While researchers are still working out the details of how it works, it is evident that grounding is somehow functioning to protect cells, neutralize inflammation, and resolve injuries faster.
Sleeping Benefits
Could electrical disturbances be causing us to lose sleep? One study set out to examine how earthing affects sleep and cortisol levels. Participants in the study all complained about their sleep quality, as well as reported body pain and high stress. Researchers took measurements of cortisol levels before the participants began earthing and compared them to the levels taken after 8 weeks of sleeping grounded. At the beginning of the study, the levels started off very scattered from one participant to the next. However, by the end of the study, almost every participant had fallen into a similar cortisol pattern with levels peaking and lowering around the same times in the span of 24 hours. Participants reported that, after grounding, they were able to fall asleep faster, wake up fewer times in the night, and had improved waking energy levels.
Earthing Indoors
These are only a few of the areas that research has revealed positive results! Cardiovascular health, blood-mineral concentrations, and glucose regulation are also showing promising results from earthing. I don’t know about you, but I’m sold! So, with the hectic days of today’s world, how can we make sure that we are finding time to ground? In ideal circumstances, we would all set aside time to walk or sit outside to ground every day. The reality is that even with our best efforts, that doesn’t always happen. The good news is that you can find grounding mats or even bedsheets to help you ground inside! These products connect to a grounded outlet inside your home, or other such indoor space, and basically create an extension cord for the earth’s electrons. By sleeping on grounded sheets or sitting on a grounded mat, you are able to make earthing a priority even on the days that you can’t get outside.
