Ways to Spend Less Time on Your Smartphone

Cell phones have made such significant innovations and it seems everyone has one. A smartphone allows us to have everything at our disposal. We can watch a movie, read a book, catch up on the news, talk to loved ones, do some online shopping, pay bills, etc. at any point throughout the day.

While that is a benefit of this advancing technology, there is also a downside. Most people have formed an unhealthy attachment to their cell phones, and it makes it difficult to allocate time to anything else. Smartphones can take up valuable time that can be used for productivity or spent with friends and family. Here are a few ways to spend less time on your phone.

Have a spot dedicated to your phone.

Most of the time, we feel the need to reach for our phone when we are bored or just because we are so used to it. That is why, to distance yourself from your smartphone, you should keep it in a designated spot when you are home. This can be a drawer or a charging station. Just someplace where you will not be tempted to grab and use it often.

Do not use it as an alarm clock.

A feature that most everyone with a smartphone uses is the alarm clock. However, you should avoid using the phone as an alarm clock, because once you wake up and turn it off, it becomes easy for you to stay on your phone making the first thing you do in the morning scrolling through your apps. Instead, you should purchase a classic alarm clock and keep your phone use in the morning to a minimum.

Use a bag instead of your pocket.

These days it is so common to see people at a restaurant staring at their phones. If you do not want that to be you, you should consider keeping your phone in your bag or someone else’s bag. This keeps the phone out of sight and out of mind and you are not tempted to grab it as soon as you see a notification or have a moment of silence.

Turn off unimportant notifications.

We have become so accustomed to our phones and the sounds it makes that it is now a physical reaction every time we hear a notification. To combat this, you should turn off all unnecessary notifications. You may keep your ringer and texts on, but other apps can wait until you take the time to look at them. It keeps you from letting your phone have so much control of your attention.

Keep it out of bed.

At the end of the day, we want to be able to relax in bed and scroll mindlessly through our phones;however, it is best to not bring your phone into bed. Being on your phone contributes to a lack of sleep. You stay on it much longer than anticipated and sacrifice your rest. The best practice is, when going to bed, to not bring your phone.

Look at your screen time.

If you have ever wanted to know how much time you spend on your phone, and specifically each app, you need to check out your screen time. It keeps track of all that information, and it can be a good visual to represent how much time you are truly wasting on your phone. Use this to keep yourself accountable for your phone use.
