Dave’s Corner: Veterans Qualify for Year-Round Enrollment

In this edition of Dave’s Corner, we’re going to provide a quick tip for those who have served our country. In fact, did you know this tip is not in the normal Medicare & You guide and our carrier-specific guide, which shows 28 different special enrollment periods (SEPs) outside the normal open enrollment periods? So what tip can David give us that’s not in our booklets?

If a veteran has traditional Medicare (red, white, and blue card) and receive their drugs from the VA, they have a year-round enrollment opportunity. If you would like to know how to access an MA plan for a veteran year-round, email David Russell at drussell@empowerbrokerage.com or give him a call at 817-410-5853. When you email Dave, be sure to ask about the special election code.

For those that don’t have year-round enrollment status like veterans, you have to have an SEP. What’s an SEP? It is a time period outside of the yearly open enrollment period when you can sign up for insurance. You qualify for an SEP if you’ve experienced qualifying life events, including losing coverage, moving, getting married, having a baby, or adopting a child. If you qualify for an SEP, you have up to 60 days following the event to enroll in a plan. If you miss that window, you have to wait until the next Open Enrollment Period to apply. Answer a few quick questions to see if you may qualify for a Special Enrollment Period or for Medicaid or CHIP.
